Breaking Ranks

Land of the Free No More

Jared Keller Apr 6, 2010
"Freedom in peril" has become the major narrative of the conservative resistance to health-care reform. While the left dismisses this fear as overblown rhetoric, the Heritage Foundation thinks it's more than a fear--it's a fact. In their recent Index of Economic Freedom World Rankings, the conservative think tank has dropped the United States' ranking from "free" to "mostly free," coming in behind countries such as Canada and New Zealand.

After a year of bailouts and health-care reform, is America actually sliding into a condition of relative unfreedom?
