Conrad Black's Going Back to Prison

Media-hating former media mogul Conrad Black is going back to jail, after a Chicago judge resentenced him to serve 42 months on mail fraud and obstruction charges. Black's legal team had hoped the 66-year-old would be allowed to go free because of time served. Black spent 29 months in federal prison before being released last year to pursue a partially successful appeal of his original 78 month sentence. In October 2010, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court tossed out all but two of Black's convictions from his original trial. National Post correspondent Theresa Tedesco notes that the new sentence sounds longer than it is, because he's getting credit for the 29 months he already served. "In other words," she writes, "he is back in jail for 13 months and 10 percent discount for good behaviour." That was of little comfort to Black's wife Barbara Amiel, who fainted when the verdict was announced.
