The number of people applying for unemployment benefits last week fell to its lowest level since March 2008, with 13,000 fewer claiming the benefits than the previous week, for a national total of 348,000.

The previous weekly total of 361,000 already had people's attention as it marked the lowest number of unemployment claims since 2008. Last week's number was the lowest since March, 2008. The four-week moving average, which economists see as a more stable number, fell by 1,750 to 365,250 for the week.
