It's that time of year again, when the American Society of Magazine Editors releases its list of award nominees, and everyone in the print media business peers jealously at the competition.

This year, The New Yorker and New York lead the pack with six nominations each. The Atlantic picked up three nominations, including for reporting (for Matthieu Aikins' "Our Man in Kandahar"), for columns and commentary (for the columns of James Parker), and for fiction (Sarah Turcottte's "Scars"). In a first, Vice also picked up a nomination, for general excellence. Country Living and The Fader got their first-ever nominations, too, in the same category. Inevitably, Bloomberg BusinessWeek was nominated for design, reminding us that creative director Richard Turley talked to The Atlantic Wire in February.

Update (1:20 p.m. EDT): An important observation from Liliana Segura, associate editor at The Nation: "Someone tell me I'm misreading this: NO WOMEN nominated for ASMEs in Reporting, Features, Profiles, Essays or Columns?" We're still double-checking, but so far that seems correct. 

Update (1:28 p.m. EDT): Yup, Segura's right. All men nominated in those categories.
