It seems that the officially verified Twitter account of the Burger King has become the victim of a prank, since the account just announced they were sold to McDonald's and all their employees are on drugs.

Here's the initial series of tweets, preserved for posterity since typically these things get cleaned up pretty fast.

As of 12:30 p.m. ET, the account is still under the control of ... someone, possibly related to the empty account @DFNCTSC, which is apparently the call letters of a hacking group known for breaking in to Paris Hilton's cellphone account years ago. Though someone could just be using the name for effect. They've also dropped references to Anonymous and LulzSec.

Keep following @BurgerKing—not to be confused with the real @McDonalds—and maybe the answers will emerge. Although why you're following any fast food chain on Twitter escapes us.

Update (1:10 p.m.): More than a hour after it began, Burger King still doesn't have their account back. They have gained about 12,000 followers however.

Update (1:16 p.m.): And now the account is suspended. It was a good run, but our national burger nightmare is over. At last count, @BurgerKing had gained close to 30,000 new followers. At least one company feels sorry for them:

We empathize with our @burgerking counterparts. Rest assured, we had nothing to do with the hacking.
