It all started when Sen. John McCain's daughter posted a Twitter photo of herself wearing a low-cut tank top. In no time, Ms. McCain's tens of thousands of followers began ranting and raving. Many of them began hurling insults, to which she responded: "When I am alone in my apartment, I wear tank tops and sweat pants, I had no idea this makes me a 'slut', I can't even tell you how hurt I am." But the epithets kept coming and McCain threatened to delete her Twitter account. Enter Jake Tapper with the words of comfort:
@McCainBlogette this can really be a place of bile, but you should know however rude these folks are theyre a vast minority...and theyre attacking you largely bc it's the only way they can feel good about themselves. like mean 9-year-olds.But Tapper's innocuous consolation struck a nerve with conservative blogger Allahpundit, who felt Tapper was criticizing him. Allahpundit responded:
Wow, even Tapper's dumping on me now. Any other friends want to step up and take a shot?"Rushing to put out the fire, Tapper responded:
@allahpundit am NOT dumping on you. am saying those who personally attack her should step off."Then Allahpundit attempted to vindicate himself:
@jaketapper I've always said she's beautiful. Would never make fun of her looks, esp. given my own.Showing signs of irritation, Tapper responded:
@allahpundit dude, not talking about you.Allahpundit finally cooled down:
Dude, it's totally time for a beer summit. Me, Meggie, Tapper, and Obama. Rose Garden. Bottle of Jack is fine in lieu of beer.Ending on a positive note, Tapper chuckled:
@allahpundit i'll bring the soy sauce
