Baseball superstar Mark McGwire's admission to steroid use shocked and flummoxed sportswriters on Monday. But few people have expressed more disgust and disappointment than Brian Williams, the usually sedate and detached host of NBC Nightly News. Williams, who calls McGwire's 1998 spree "magical stuff," doesn't try to hide his strong feelings about the baseball player's perfidy. It's unusual to see Williams editorialize so much -- and downright perplexing why he would pick this moment to get upset rather than, say, the global financial crisis.
