What do you get when you combine kitschy animated kids film "Kung-Fu Panda" with famously eccentric screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, whose quirky films include "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Adaptation" and "Being John Malkovitch"? According to the Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog, you get "Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom," which Borys Kit and Ace Fernandez say is being written by Kaufman himself. Or co-written, anyway.

His work on “Kaboom” falls under the polish category, and animated movies tend to be worked on by multiple writers, so it’s not fair to say this will be a Kaufman cartoon. But it will be interesting to see, when the movie is released in 2011, how much of the Kaufman stamp it will bear.

And it’s also interesting to think about the potentially other secret assignments the UTA-repped Kaufman may have taken over the years in order to be keep working on his unique projects. (There was a four-year gap in between “Spotless Mind” and “Synecdoche, New York,” which he also directed.”)

Will the cartoon sequel include a touch of Kaufman's signature tragic surrealist comedy? Probably not, but we won't know for sure until the film is released.
