Thus began a five-minute battle for attention between Colbert and actor Michael J. Fox. In a gag that was one-part bizarre and two parts hilarious, Fox repeatedly tried to get Colbert to hard-sell his book, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future." After Colbert politely declined, Fox resorted to annoying him from a room under the Comedy Central host's desk, playing the harmonica, eating celery, and building a birdhouse.
When Fox found Colbert's old "Gladiator" magazines, the satirist dashed to the secret room, where he found himself locked in. The amusing segment ended with Fox sitting at Colbert's desk, smugly promoting his new book.
