Strange Bedfellows

Donald Trump, Salman Rushdie Love Folk Rock

Heather Horn Sep 10, 2010
Quick. Name one thing that unites buttery-coiffed business magnate Donald Trump and once-hunted, prize-winning novelist Salman Rushdie. If you've read New York Magazine's witty little interview with the latter, you know the answer: the band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. The two  had adjoining seats at a concert. Trump "knew all the words."

But the connection goes deeper. The Apprentice host is apparently also "very nice" to the novelist. "Whenever he sees me," says Rushdie, " he points and shouts, 'You're the best!' (Which is better than 'You're fired!' I guess.)"

It's hard to imagine Trump delivering the same responses as Rushdie does to some of the other questions, though. Some of our favorites:

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
I sit at a desk and stare out of a window.

What was your first job in New York?
I sat at a desk and stared out of a window.

...

Who is your mortal enemy?
Most of the really dangerous enemies in my life have been immortal.

...

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
God, I'm so broke. Please give me money.

All this and more here.
