Fox News isn't often a bastion of liberal political causes, but the conservative network's Sacramento affiliate KTXL has decided to let the free market speak. Fox viewers around the California capital were recently treated to what is believed to be the first-ever TV advertisement for marijuana. Medical marijuana dispensary CannaCare, which operates legally in California, bought a 30-second spot boasting the benefits of pot. But Fox affiliate KTXL didn't just air the ad; they even produced it.

CNN's Tracy Murphy writes, "Marijuana is not shown in the advertisement, and the word 'marijuana' is never used. Instead, patients and the ad itself refer to pot as 'cannabis.' Of course, right now, this is as controversial as when cigarette, condom and Viagra commericials first hit television." (Cigarettes are now forbidden in TV commercials.) We here at the Atlantic Wire eagerly await the day when condoms, Viagra, and marijuana are all mentioned in a single advertisement. Whenever that happens, it will presumably air on Fox News.
