If you take out the widespread voter fraud, election day in Haiti yesterday passed without major incident. The same cannot be said for election eve, when musician-turned-presidential-candidate-turned-celebrity-endorser Wyclef Jean was shot in the hand outside Port au Prince.

Jean's spokeswoman described the wound as a "minor graze." The former Fugees frontman (who may or may not have been in the company of Busta Rhymes at the time of the incident) told the AP he has "no idea" who fired the shots just after 11 p.m. Saturday night. Petionville police officials speculated the wound may even have been caused by shattered glass, not a bullet. Glass or no glass, Haitian police chief Mario Andresol promised that Jean would have to "answer to police, no matter what."

Jean caused a stir this summer when he announced and quickly abandoned his bid to be president of the Carribean country. Since then, he has emerged as an enthusiastic backer of Mike “Sweet Micky” Martelly (a Haitian music star), currently in a runoff against Mirlande Manigat, Haiti's former first lady. The Miami Herald describes Martelly as the "dark horse candidate who enjoys the support of the nation’s youth, weary of the country’s old political guard."
