• Variety snagged the "only U.S. interview" with Mel Gibson at Cannes, and in truth, it's pretty unremarkable. The most interesting part is how angry Variety gets with Deadline.com for mentioning the interview ("Exclusive: Mel Gibson Speaks"), but then linking back to the interview they got with Gibson back in April. "When the Cannes Festival is on, and 4,000 other reporters are trying to get stories, it's pretty hard to get anything exclusive," snipes Variety. "And a flashy headline can at least drive Web traffic and lead people into thinking something special happened -- even if it didn't happen and was a month ago." [Variety]
• Woody Allen's made a "shy but momentous appearance" at the after-party for the Cinema Scoiety screening of his new film Midnight in Paris. Though he and wife Soon-Yi left the Soho Grand ballroom "within five minutes" of arriving, it took precedent over the scoop that Michael Sheen and Rachel McAdams are an item. [New York Post]
• The New York Times doesn't want to sell the Boston Globe, but they'll hear your offer. New York Times Co. chief executive Janet Robinson told Globe staffers at a meeting Wednesday that while the company "is not pursuing offers for the Globe," as a publicly traded company they have to entertain offers. That's good news for New England businessman Aaron Kushner, who is said to be preparing a $200 million offer for the paper. [Boston Globe]
• Olivia Munn and Allison Pill joined the cast of Aaron Sorkin's untitled HBO cable news drama (a subject on which he has quite a few thoughts.) They'll play alongside Jeff Daniels, who has "the Keith Olbermann part." Marisa Tomei is also rumored to be circling a role. [The Hollywood Reporter]
• A reminder--tonight is Katie Couric's last Evening News broadcast. CBS will use rotating anchors in the interim, with the Scott Pelley era officially kicking off on June 6. [Los Angeles Times]
