On The Daily Show last night, Jon Stewart was feeling pretty down about the way the American media covered the Casey Anthony trial. He perked up considerably after Daily Show correspondent and Englishman John Oliver gave him a crash course in the News of the World phone hacking scandal. Along with effectively condensing the key revelations from a complicated, incremental news story into a seven-minute segment, Oliver explained the spooky, outsized influence of British tabloids better than anyone we've seen in recent days. "Do you know how hard it is to disgrace an English tabloid?" he asked Stewart. He didn't, and neither did we.
There are also some very good Mary Poppins jokes.
