U.S. Soccer hired 47-year-old Juergen Klinsmann to coach the men's national team Friday, a day after firing Bob Bradley after five years on the job.

Heather Horn, The Atlantic Wire's resident German soccer geek, says Klinsmann is "something of a German superhero" for rejuvenating the aging German team and leading it to an unexpected third-place finish in the 2006 World Cup. (This could also be because he looks rather like a superhero.) According to ESPN, U.S. Soccer officials tried to hire him then, and then again in 2010, but the deals fell through. Klinsmann also reportedly resisted entreaties to stay at the head of the German team after 2006. As a player, he scored 11 goals in three World Cups.

Per the Associated Press, he'll be officially introduced at a press conference in New York on Monday
