Jen Doll's books column today elicited a discussion of the cons of e-books. Commenter Edward E wondered about the continuity of the notes we record in e-readers as technology changes:
The other problem with e-books is permanency. If I make a note or underline in a paper book and then put it on my bookshelf, I will be able to go back to those marks forever. But if I made those marks electronically in my Kindle, who knows if that file format will still be used ten years from now?
It's a valid question, especially considering the fact that we still have medieval marginalia.
