'I Kept Tossing It on a Shelf in Disgust'

Jen Doll's take on hate reading books struck a nerve with many of our readers. One commenter walked us through the logic behind her masochistic tendency to stick it out with books that bring her no joy. Karen Kelly hate reads because of sunk costs, and because she's dedicated to reading every book from cover-to-cover no matter how much hate it stirs. She writes

I've had a few hate reads. I bought the books, started reading, and discovered how badly they sucked. I suffered through them because (1) I'd spent the money to buy them and (2) I hate giving up on books. One of them took me nearly a year to finish because I kept tossing it on a shelf in disgust, only to pick it back up when I had nothing else to read.
