German Techno-Pop vs. the Taliban

Max Fisher May 10, 2010
Last month we brought you the epic struggle between Metallica and the Taliban, in which U.S. forces blasted heavy metal music to antagonize the fundamentalist insurgency, which has banned all music. We also looked at the Lady Gaga parody video made by some slam-dancing, lip-syncing U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. But the U.S. is not the only foreign military force in this war. Germany is the third highest contributor of troops to the international force, with almost 5,000 soldiers currently on the ground.

The German forces in Afghanistan have brought their own secret weapon to the musical fight against the Taliban: German Techno-Pop. Thomas Rid of the King's College of London's blog on all things warfare has the scoop. Rid doesn't want to dismiss the U.S. musical efforts in the war, but Germany got there first.
It is a little know fact that the German Luftwaffe has pioneered the brutal tactic in 2007. Their tune — Olaf Henning’s “Cowboy und Indianer” – is far more devastating than, say, Rammstein’s “Heirate Mich.” The Germano-pop boasts unmistakably suggestive undertones, “Komm’ hol’ das Lasso raus,” or “come get the lasso out.” Without doubt a crippling blow to the Mullahs’ morale. Most lethal are the phallic missiles, I’d say. Watch your back, Talib.
Rid helpfully attaches a YouTube video of German troops in Afghanistan who have produced their own parody video of "Cowboy und Indianer." Keep it handy for the next time you need to intimidate an extremist religious terrorist network or have a dance party.
