Iman al-Obeidi, the woman who says she was abducted and gang-raped by Qaddafi militiamen in March, has escaped from Libya. CNN reports that al-Obeidi managed to sneak across the border into Tunisia, and has made her way to the French embassy there.

How did al-Obeidi escape? It's a pretty amazing story. In an interview at a Tunisian safehouse, al-Obeidi explained that she'd driven across the border with two defecting military officers. She wore "a traditional tribal headwear" that covered everything except one eye. At checkpoints, the officers would show their credentials, and they'd be let through.

Now, al-Obeidi is at the French embassy in Tunis. According to CNN, "a diplomatic protection team is helping her," and French President Nicolas Sarkozy "is taking an intimate interest in her every movement." It's unclear what al-Obeidi's next move will be: she says she'd like to go home and see her family in Libya, but she'd been under virtual house arrest in Tripoli since going public with her story.

"I still don't know what I'm going to do," al-Obeidi told CNN.
