Turkey's military has been thrown into disarray as the heads of each branch suddenly resigned today along with General Isik Kosaner, the overall head of the Turkish armed forces. According to Al Jazeera, "the country's state-run Anatolia news agency said the military chiefs have resigned because of tensions with Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the recently re-elected prime minister." The news agency pointed out that the mass resignations, due to be announced officially in the next hour or two, "come ahead of the annual spring meeting scheduled for August 1, where leaders of the government and the military come together to discuss key appointments for the next year." But according to Reuters, Erdogan said the generals "were not resigning but going into retirement." That same report cites the State-run Anatolian news agency as reporting that Kosaner "saw it necessary" to resign. Turkey has the second-biggest military in NATO, Reuters reports.
