Glenn Mulcaire, the private investigator hired by News of the World who allegedly did the actual phone hacking, is suing News Corp.'s British newspaper division "in an attempt to force the company to pay his legal bills." Faced with mounting criticism, News Corp. cut off Mulcaire on July 20. The Guardian reports:

It emerged earlier this week that News International has paid "approximately £246,000" to lawyers acting for Mulcaire.

He has issued a high court writ claiming News Group Newspapers, the News International subsidiary that published the News of the World until last month, has a contractual obligation to pay the legal bills he is running up fighting more than a dozen high court cases being brought by public figures.

Regardless of who pays the bills, things are not looking good for Mulcaire. In light of the fact that police have arrested News of the World's former Hollywood reporter on Thursday, the scandal is far from over.
