Obama Condemns al-Assad's 'Disdain for Human Life and Dignity'
In further turbulence in Syria, government security forces killed seven protesters on the first day of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr, say activists. Following morning prayers, Syrian Muslims took to the streets across several towns Tuesday morning where they clashed with authorities who opened fire on them, reports Al-Jazeera. Six deaths occurred in Deraa, in the south, and one in Homs. "Meanwhile, in New York, UN Security Council ambassadors met behind closed doors on Monday to discuss rival UN resolutions on Syria," reports the news service. While the U.S. and Europe are pushing for sanctions, Russia is simply seeking a resolution calling for President Bashar al-Assad's government to stop the violence.
