At least 239 people were killed and more than 1,000 were injured in this weekend's earthquakes in Turkey, as rescue teams continue to dig through the rubble in the hope of finding more survivors.

The death toll is expected to go even higher as more than 200 aftershocks continued to shake the southeastern part of the country, which between two major fault lines. The initial quake measured 7.2 on the Richter scale.

The Red Crescent has rushed in to provide tents and blankets to the thousands left homeless in freezing cold temperatures. According to the BBC, more than 80 multi-story buildings collapsed in Erics, perhaps the hardest hit city, and electricity and phone services are out across the region.

Meanwhile, local people were seen digging through piles of bubble with their bare hands, hoping to reach survivors. Crews have complained about the lack of machinery and other services.
