Police shot and injured a lone gunman after the man fired shots toward the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo. The embassy is located in a crowded downtown area, Reuters reports, and the attacker injured a police officer and panicked business owners in the area. The State Department said there are no other reported American injuries, The New York Times reports. Bosnia's Bosniak Muslim president, Bakir Izetbegovic called it "a terrorist attack." Bosnian television identified the man, bearded and carrying a Kalashnikov assault rifle, as 23-year-old Mevlid Jasarevic, a Serbian citizen from the mainly Muslim town of Novi Pazar. It said he had been visiting a community of hardline Islamists in northern Bosnia.

Bosnia was torn apart in the 90s by a civil war between the Musliam Bosniaks, Croats, and Serbs. A Bosnian news agency posted a slightly graphic video of Jasarevic slowly pacing outside the embassy before police shot him.
