A psychiatric report has ruled that Anders Breivik, who murdered 77 people in a mass killing spree in Norway this summer, is mentally ill and should not face a normal criminal trial and prison

The courts will still have to rule on the report, but if the conclusion is upheld then Breivik will face forced psychiatric treatment, rather than prison, and could be released if he's later determined to no longer be a threat to others.

On July 22 of this year, Breivik set off a bomb in Oslo that killed eight people, before traveling to a Labour Party youth camp on the island of Utøya, where he shot and killed 69 people, mostly young teenagers. Breivik also distributed a massive and confused manifesto denouncing Norway's policies of multiculturalism and immigration, as well as expressing his hatred for Muslims in Europe.
