At least 44 inmates at a prison just outside Monterrey, Mexico, are dead after a riot broke out in the early morning hours, Reuters is reporting. It began at 2 a.m. as a fight in the high-security section of the prison between rival gangs, many of whom were members of the warring Gulf and Zetas drug cartels. Victims were "beaten, knifed and stoned" to death before officials could gain control of the situation at around 6 a.m. An investigation is underway. Pictured: The AP reports that family members have gathered outside the prison gates, and are "pushing at the fences and shouting at police to demand word of the victims."
