Following Sunday's attacks on U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, Newt Gingrich sounded a pessimistic note about U.S. involvement there. "We’re not going to fix Afghanistan... It’s not possible” The Wall Street Journal's Danny Yadron quotes Gingrich saying Monday at a business luncheon. "What you have to do is say, ‘You know, you’re going to have to figure out how to live your own miserable life… Because you clearly don’t want to learn from me how to be unmiserable,'" which sounds a bit like the tone of a bitter break-up e-mail.

The comments come on a day when The Journal also ran a report about war hawks criticizing the speed of President Obama's drawdown, urging him to slow it up. Gingrich's comments seem to put him more in line with the president and those who preach a quicker pull out. That's not to say Newt has been a fan of Obama's policy in Afghanistan lately. He had harsh words for the President's apology to Afghanistan's President Karzai after Koran burning led to deadly riots.
