Twelve people have survived the crash of a Russian passenger plane that killed 31 others in Siberia on Monday. The ATR-72 turboprop plane went down in a snow-covered field shortly after taking off early this morning, although no cause has been determined yet. Despite a general increase in aviation safety worldwide, including a steep decline in the number of fatal accidents, air safety in Russia has been particularly poor in recent years. There were 15 fatal crashes involving Russian planes last year, killing 120 people, including the entire roster and staff of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team in crash in September.
