It was announced Sunday that Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi defeated former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik to become Egypt's first elected President. Morsi won with just under 52% of the vote, and is the first President since Hosni Mubarak was overthrown. Worries of violence in Tahrir Square depending on who won were quickly put to rest, as crowds gathered to hear the results burst into celebratory when Morsi's name was called, though worries persist that the Muslim Brotherhood candidate will divide the country. The president has largely been left powerless after the country's military rulers disbanded parliament and stripped the presidency of some of its executive powers. The Muslim Brotherhood announced after the election results were released that they would continue protesting the council's decision to disband the government.
