The 23-year-old woman who was raped and attacked by six men on a moving bus in New Delhi, India, setting off a wave of protests and questionable government responses through the country, died as a result of her injuries in a Singapore hospital Friday. The unnamed student was raped and attacked on December 16 by several men, and suffered injuries so brutal that she required three abdominal surgeries. Prior to her death, the attack and the lack of action of the Indian government has sparked protests in New Delhi and elsewhere, bringing international attention to the way rape victims are treated in the country and painting a disheartening portrait of women's rights in India. Here's the BBC's report:

Earlier Friday, doctors had told reporters that the woman was showing signs of organ failure. As news of the woman's death spread, more protests were expected this weekend.
