Elton John: Jesus Was Gay

John Hudson 171 Views Feb 19, 2010
In a perplexing interview with Parade, Elton John performed some unorthodox New Testament hermeneutics. In a brief discussion on Christianity, he describes Jesus as a "compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems." The interview focuses on John's transition from prolific rock star to "committed" philanthropist. He also discusses drug addiction, personal relationships, and the limits of fame. In his final take on Christ, he says:
On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don't know what makes people so cruel.
In his own peculiar way, Sir Elton does seem to be praising Christianity. Whatever the intent, reactions on Twitter range from angry to sad to ecstatic.
