Beck: Beware 'Social Justice Christians'

Glenn Beck has many enemies, but last week he named a new one: social justice. Why? It led to Communism on the left, he said, and fascism on the right. He urged Christians to leave their church if their minister or priest--or even the church's website--mentioned the words "social justice."

Now Christians are striking back. "The Bible is clear," says liberal evangelical Rev. Jim Wallis on his blog:

from the Mosaic law of Jubilee, to the Hebrew prophets, to Jesus Christ, social justice is an integral part of God’s plan for humanity. Beck says Christians should leave their social justice churches, so I say Christians should leave Glenn Beck. I don't know if Beck is just strange, just trying to be controversial, or just trying to make money. But in any case, what he has said attacks the very heart of our Christian faith, and Christians should no longer watch his show.

Meanwhile, The New York Times quotes a professor of Mormon history Philip Barlow on the strong "care for the poor" theme in Mormonism--Beck's faith--as well.
