Illinois became the sixteenth state to ban capital punishment today, a decision that has produced no shortage of teeth-gnashing from supporters and critics alike. But was the legislation the most important thing for Governor Pat Quinn to address? Commenter Kelli K puts the ban in perspective.

Don't take this the wrong way, but as an Illinois resident I don't give a flying you know what if Quinn signs this bill or not. I mean, no one has been executed in this state for years (nor are they likely to be even if the bill remains unsigned).

This is a non-issue.

We are bankrupt. Possibly the most bankrupt state in the union. Where's the bill to fix that?
