As more harrowing details emerged about the case of the Long Island serial killer, people closely involved with the investigation began to suspect that the killer was perhaps a little too savvy to just be an ordinary citizen. One person involved in the investigation told the New York Times, "He is a a guy who is aware of how we utilize technology... Frankly, people are thinking maybe he could be a cop."

Now the New York Post is reporting that two NYPD cops are being "eyed" in the serial killings after investigators learned they got into trouble for hiring prostitutes while working for the department, sources familiar with the case related. There's no word yet as to whether the officers acted in tandem or even knew each other.

One of the cops resigned in the 1990s when his supervisors learned he spent time pursuing prostitutes and paying "down-and-out" women for sex while he was supposed to be on patrol. There is no mention of criminal charges that were filed against him. Even more disturbing, the other cop is still with the NYPD, although not on the street. He was stripped of his gun and badge years ago because he allegedly assaulted a prostitute and got arrested during a sting operation. But after the woman complained to police supervisors, no criminal charges were filed and the internal investigation ended.

Moreover, the idea that such egregious incidences of officer misconduct in the past might not have been investigated and dealt with thoroughly is almost as unsettling as the idea that the sadistic killer was in law enforcement. Perhaps it's true, as some have speculated, that our nation needs a serial killer to care about prostitutes.
