Ray Nagin Charges Compound a Broken Legacy of Post-Katrina Leadership
Police successfully foiled plans for a school shooting on the first day of school in suburban New Orleans on Friday. The Associated Press reports:
Lakeshore High School officials became aware of a group calling themselves Day Zero last month when other students contacted administrators. The teens had targeted specific students, but part of the plan was also indiscriminate shooting, said St. Tammany Parish Cpl. George Bonnett. … Sheriff Jack Strain said the three 15-year-old boys were being held at a juvenile detention center on charges of conspiracy to commit terrorism and more charges were possible.
According to school officials, the boys' classmates overheard the plans and turned them in. The arrest seems a little victory for local authorities on the same day that five New Orleans officers were convicted on 25 charges related to a post-Katrina shooting.
