Accused child molester Jerry Sandusky's lawyer suggested this week that his client showered with young boys because may have been teaching them hygiene. Sandusky, a former assistant Penn State football coach, faces 52 counts of sexual assault against 10 boys, many of whom participated in a football program he ran in Penn State's facilities. Sandusky maintains his innocence though he admits to having showered with some of the boys. Karl Rominger, a new member of his legal team, told a local news station Tuesday:

Teaching a person to shower at the age of 12 or 14 sounds strange to some people, but people who work with troubled youth will tell you there are a lot of juvenile delinquents and people who are dependent who have to be taught basic life skills, like how to put soap on their body.

It's growing less and less clear to us just what kind of public media campaign Sandusky's lawyers think they are running, since this story is just one in a list of bizarre comments from Sandusky or his lawyers that have come out since his arrest. (You'll recall his painful, lawyer-sanctioned interview with Bob Costas.) Certainly they're probably very busy preparing a case for the legal courts, but if its anything like the case they are making in the court of public opinion, we don't see them succeeding.
