A peek at the calendar reveals that it's late January, but to look around New York, you'd think otherwise. Today has been an absolutely nuts weather day with a warm thunderstorm followed by an amazing sunset inspiring seemingly everybody in the city to tweet pictures.

Where are the foot-deep puddles of slush? Where are the slick, frozen sidewalks? This whole year has been screwy weather-wise, from that hurricane to the Halloween snow (and last winter's super-rare thunder snow), but today might have been the strangest day of all. It looked like a summer thunderstorm, felt like spring rain, and bore absolutely no resemblance to last year's third apocalyptic blizzard in a row. One thing's for sure: it made for awesome pictures. 

First off, though, remember this? Jan. 27 last year stayed just around freezing after this crazy night of snow:

This year, it stayed in the 50s all day, and when it wasn't shooting down rain, the sky looked "Mordorian," as Brooklyn Paper reporter Dan McLeoud tweeted. Michael Tapp shared this photo of exactly that:
