Mimosa fans beware: the Federal Drug Administration won't be allowing any orange juice into the country until it can properly screen the imports for traces of a banned fungicide. What's worse is that the FDA could start pulling juice from the shelves in order to screen it for the chemical carbendazim, which can cause liver damage; if they find more than trace amounts of it, officials will "take the necessary action to ensure that the product is removed from the market." What's even worse is that the price of orange juice has skyrocketed since the FDA first discovered traces of the chemical -- prices spiked nearly 10 percent on Tuesday -- so stocking up will probably be an expensive endeavor. And what's the absolute worst is that you've probably been consuming this chemical without the FDA knowing about it for a while, since it's common in Brazil where nearly half of the United States' orange juice is produced. We're pleased to report that tomato juice appears to be unaffected, so be sure to choose a bloody mary at brunch this weekend.
