Fire at Macy's 34th Street Flagship Store

Update: An FDNY spokesman tells us the fire is "almost under control" and responders have put out the main source of fire, but still no word on the amount of damage.

Firefighters are currently fighting a blaze at the iconic Macy's in Herald Square after reports of a fire in the basement Wednesday afternoon. The enormous store is a landmark, most notably featured in the film Miracle on 34th Street, so we certainly hope there's no lasting damage. According to DNA Info, hundreds of customers were led out of the building, and least one (jokingly?) tweeted that it was an opportunity to walk out wearing unpurchased merchandise.

In the meantime, our search for details on Twitter yielded some days-old tweets that look rather unfortunate in retrospect like this fun missive: "If that man doesn't come back here with the boots I originally wanted ill be setting fire to Macy's shoe department." Yeesh.
