The man responsible for killing seven people at an Oakland, California, college yesterday was a former student who had reportedly been kicked out of the school and had returned looking to attack an administrator with whom he had a dispute. Police identified 43-year-old One Goh, a former nursing student at Oikos University, as the only suspect. He was arrested in nearby Alameda about an hour after the attack and has yet to be charged.

On Tuesday, police began to release more details of the attack. According to Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan, who spoke to CNN this morning, Goh walked into the single school building around 10:30 a.m. and took a secretary hostage while apparently looking to find a school official who was not there. He then moved into a nearby classroom where he lined students up against a wall and then began shooting. He then continued shooting as he left the building and fled to a grocery store about five miles from the campus, where he was eventually arrested. In all ten people were shot and seven killed, six of them women.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Goh is a naturalized citizen from South Korea who previously lived in Virginia, where he left behind a string of financial judgments and tax liens. He had been attending Oikos until a few months ago, when he apparently was involved in some kind of dispute with a school official and had been kicked out his classes, though the reason why is unclear. Also, both his mother (who was living in Seoul) and his brother, a U.S. Army sergeant, had died with the last year.

Oikos is a small private college that offers offers degrees in theology, music, nursing and Asian medicine, mostly to members of the Korean American Christian community. It was founded 10 years ago by Pastor Jong Kim and has fewer than 100 total students.
