British scientists think ancient humans once lived on land now under water due to rising sea levels. The red on the map below marks Doggerland, the name scientists gave the now-submerged land around the UK. “Doggerland was the real heartland of Europe until sea levels rose to give us the UK coastline of today," Dr. Richard Bates at the University of St. Andrews said in the release.

It's only been in the past few years that they've found more with the help of oil companies, including artifacts such as pieces of flint and details about the type of animals living there. They predict that tens of thousands of people could have lived there. Bates notes that while they now know the what the land looked like--hills, swamps, rivers--a lot of the evidence has been eroded by being underwater. So all ye coastal cities, be warned. Our artifacts probably won't last underwater, either.
