Giffords Shooter Pleads Guilty to 19 Counts; Agrees to Life in Prison
Reports are saying Jared Loughner will be declared mentally fit enough to face the charges against him for the mass shooting that killed six and injured Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 12 others, on Tuesday, and he's expected to enter a guilty plea in exchange for life in prison.
The L.A. Times and the Wall Street Journal are both crediting anonymous sources close to the case with the new information. A U.S. Attorney's office spokesman dodged questions from CNN over the reports. A court-appointed psychiatrist will testify that Loughner is mentally stable enough to stand trial, and he will change his plea to guilty. Loughner started to show signs of sanity in February when he lost three appeals to be taken off the court-mandated psychotropic drugs treating him for schizophrenia that would eventually lead him to mental stability and the chance to stand trial. Loughner didn't understand that Giffords survived the shooting at first. "Thank you for the freak show. She died in front of me," Loughner shouted in a court outburst when he was originally declared unfit to stand trial.
