Robin Roberts bid farewell to ABC's Good Morning America this morning and will first visit her sick mother in Mississippi before undergoing treatment for the bone and marrow disease known as MDS. There's no timetable for when she'll be back, but she promised to return. In June, Roberts had announced that she had been suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) a disease of the blood that was once known as "preleukemia" and was beginning chemotherapy. She is also scheduled to receive a bone marrow transplant from her sister. This, of course, is terrible news considering Robin had battled breast cancer just five years ago.
"I love you and I'll see you soon," were, as The New York Daily News reports, Roberts's final words before leaving the show this morning. And some like Ann Romney went to Twitter (where #teamrobin is trending) to voice their support:
.
— Ann Romney (@AnnDRomney) August 30, 2012@robinroberts keep on fighting! We all stand with you!#teamrobin
And Whoopi Goldberg's message of encouragement:
Mornin, watching the amazing
@robinroberts last show 4 a bit. Hard not 2 tear up, she is the rock & that crew& cast adore her as we all do
