The Internet Would Rather Make Fun of Bob Costas Than Solve a Football Murder

During the halftime segment of Sunday Night Football this week, Bob Costas went long on gun control and the weekend murder-suicide by Kansas City Chief Jovan Belcher. Shortly thereafter, #BobCostasLogic was born. First things first, here's what Costas went with last night:

You'll notice that Costas is quoting heavily from Fox Writer Jason Whitlock. Now that might not be the smartest thing to do (Whitlock, in February, got into some trouble for making a racist Jeremy Lin joke). The key phrase you're looking for comes toward the end, when Costas quotes this line from Whitlock: "If he [Belcher] didn't possess/own a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today." Well, okay. Hmm. Though The Huffington Post found some people who agreed with that sentiment, it doesn't take much delving to see that logic, in that phrasing, kind of breaks apart: If Belcher didn't possess a gun, he probably wouldn't have shot Perkins, but who's to say some other tragic thing wouldn't have happened? And here's just one set of comments accompanying a YouTube posting of the Costas segment (to give you a feeling of how it went over with the YouTube crowd, sic to all of this):

All of that caught the eye of conservatives, who are currently making Bob Costas logic — or #BobCostasLogic — a thing on Twitter, like conservative handmaiden Dana Loesch (retweeted over 100 times):

And the reactions you see if you search the #BobCostasLogic hashtag:

And the whole sort of macabre — the mix of funny-angry reactions taking the forefront while the deaths of Belcher, Perkins, and Jordan Russell Davis, an unarmed 17-year-old black teen who was gunned down in Florida loom in the news background. But then again, dealing with Bob Costas's  perceived stupidity is way easier than trying to uncover the actual logic behind those deaths.
