Every 10 Minutes Spent Commuting Costs You 10% of Your Friends
You might reconsider complaining about your commute. WNYC has taken data from the Census Bureau and mapped it, showing how long the average commute takes in various zip codes. The darker the color, the longer the commute. For instance, take a look at Manhattan compared to surrounding areas and boroughs:

Or note how surprisingly Los Angeles—a place where traffic complaints are abundant—has relatively short commutes.

You'll find that rural areas have some of the most dark patches. The average commute in the 89017 zip code of Nevada takes 88.5 minutes.
