#22 Glenn Greenwald

Salon

Glenn Greenwald writes Unclaimed Territory, a blog about politics and the law at Salon. More information

In 2005, Greenwald covered, from a humble Blogspot account, the Valerie Plame and National Security Agency wiretapping scandals with an investigative proficiency that catapulted him to prominence. Now a leading voice among the wave of angry liberal bloggers who emerged during President George W. Bush's second term, Greenwald is tenacious in following a story. With Bush gone, he has not hesitated to criticize President Obama and other Democrats with the same leftward fury he used voiced when hammering the Bush White House. He has increasingly targeted the media, and even such ideological allies as Keith Olbermann, for not taking a harder line against Obama.

Befitting his background as a constitutional lawyer, Greenwald's posts meld an exhaustiveness suggestive of heavily cited legal briefs with an emotional heat that is all blogosphere.

Who Are the Undeserving 'Others' Benefitting From Expanded Government Actions?

The real power dynamic in this country has little to do with the cable-generated 'right v. left' drama and much more to do with 'outsider/insider' divisions.

Is the Right's Attack on Obama's Legitimacy New or Unprecedented?

Other than the fact that Obama's race intensifies the hatred in some precincts, nothing that the Right is doing now is new. This is who they are and what they do -- and that's been true for many years, for decades.

Norman Podhoretz's False Accusations of "Dual Loyalty"

One of the nation's most Churchillian and courageous warriors, Norman Podhoretz, is now devoting himself to the complaint that most American Jews are liberals rather than neoconservatives.

Obama Appointee Previews the Imminent Preventive Detention Debate

To Serious people, the substance of the [ detention] policy is irrelevant. What matters is that anyone who opposes it is a radical, partisan, shrill extremist.

The Difference Between 'Legal' and 'Illegal'

[This is] how emedded [sic] in our political culture is the right of government officials to break the law: "Government lawbreaking" is not even recognized as a concept that makes sense.

Major Ruling Against Ashcroft Highlights Evils of Preventive Detention

There are few powers more anathema to our system of government than the power to imprison people in the absence of proof that they committed a crime.

The Looming Political War Over Afghanistan

Whether to continue our massive National Security State and general imperial behavior (unsustainable in any event) is at least as important a question in the debate over Afghanistan as specific questions raised by the war itself.

Thomas Paine v. The Right's Torture Defenders

Few things are more repellent than watching the contemporary Right in America invoke the principles of the Founders -- in general -- to justify their warped and lawless authoritarianism.

Beltway Consensus: Blame Left for Health Care Battle

As always, everyone in Washington seems to agree that if only the Leftist crazies would stay quiet and give up on their radical ideology, everything would go smoothly. And, in a sense, they're right.

Huckabee's Right-Wing Cocoon

Huckabee knows that the Republican base lives in its own alternative, insular reality and any unpleasant or negative facts can be waved away not by refuting them, but by attributing them to the work of 'the liberal media.'

Why the Health Care Debate Is So important

This is how things always work. The industry interests which own and control our government always get their way. When is the last time they didn't?
