#22 Glenn Greenwald

Salon

Glenn Greenwald writes Unclaimed Territory, a blog about politics and the law at Salon. More information

In 2005, Greenwald covered, from a humble Blogspot account, the Valerie Plame and National Security Agency wiretapping scandals with an investigative proficiency that catapulted him to prominence. Now a leading voice among the wave of angry liberal bloggers who emerged during President George W. Bush's second term, Greenwald is tenacious in following a story. With Bush gone, he has not hesitated to criticize President Obama and other Democrats with the same leftward fury he used voiced when hammering the Bush White House. He has increasingly targeted the media, and even such ideological allies as Keith Olbermann, for not taking a harder line against Obama.

Befitting his background as a constitutional lawyer, Greenwald's posts meld an exhaustiveness suggestive of heavily cited legal briefs with an emotional heat that is all blogosphere.

Huckabee Bashes America in Israel

When 'liberals' like Al Gore criticize U.S. foreign policy in Muslim countries, that is an act of virtual treason ... When leading members of the American Right do the same in and on behalf of Israel, the silence is deafening.

Reactions to Limbaugh's Hitler/Obama Comparison

When an anonymous Internet user compares Bush to Hitler, the media goes into Full Hysteria Alert, but when the most influential conservative figure in the country does the same thing, they utter barely a peep of recognition.

Hillary Clinton Demands Accountability for War Crimes

We send murderous, crusading civilian units around the world to accompany our invading armies -- while ushering a regime of torture wherever we go -- and then announce we will only look to the future.

The Scope -- And Dangers -- of GE's Control of NBC and MSNBC

What [GE executives] mean by 'civility' is: 'thou shalt not criticize anyone who can harm GE's business interests or who will report on our actions.'

Stephen Colbert on Chuck Todd and Torture Investigations

The torture tactics Bush ordered are criminal no matter how many memos John Yoo wrote saying they weren't.

First Steps Taken To Implement Preventive Detention, Military Commissions

It's more apparent than ever that the central excuse made by Obama defenders to justify preventive detention and military commissions ... is an absolute myth.

Celebrating Cronkite While Ignoring What He Did

It's impossible even to imagine the likes of Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw and friends interrupting their pompously baritone, melodramatic, self-glorifying exploitation of Cronkite's death to spend a second pondering what he meant by that.

Chuck Todd's Arguments Against Investigations

Trying to prevent investigations of their friends, colleagues and bosses in political power is one of the few times [journalists are] willing so explicitly to turn themselves into advocates.

Unasked Question About Sam Alito

If empathy is irrelevant to judicial decision-making, why are GOP Senators calling Frank Ricci as a witness at this hearing? Since he's obviously not there to testify about the strict legalistic doctrines governing his claims.

The New Report on Illegal Spying Is Not a Real Investigation

The Bush-era torture regime might have been that administration's most flamboyant act of criminality, but its illegal NSA warrantless eavesdropping program ... has always been the clearest.

The Significance of McClatchy's Act of Journalism

No matter how many times the statements of government officials are proven false, the assumption remains that the pronouncements from high government officials are true.

The Obama Justice System

Even talking about imprisoning people based on accusations of which they have been exonerated is a truly grotesque perversion of everything that our justice system and Constitution are supposed to guarantee.

Dan Froomkin Hired by The Huffington Post

Clearly, journalism itself is not dying. What is dying -- and rightfully so -- is the staid, establishment-serving, passion-free, access-desperate, mindless stenographic model to which establishment journalism rigidly adheres.

What if the Uighurs Were Christian Rather Than Muslim?

For all the Serious analysis about the War on Terror, so much of it has been driven by nothing more complex or noble than sheer hostility towards Muslims.
