Talking Points Memo

Josh Marshall edits and blogs for Talking Points Memo, which he founded in 2000. More information

One of the first professional bloggers, Marshall remains at the vanguard by tracking down news in some of the deepest corners of Washington. Harmonizing traditional investigative reporting with the hourly news cycle of the Internet, Marshall found no shortage of material covering the Bush administration’s scandals. He has made a career out of pursuing small stories, many of which fizzle but some of which have developed into major headlines. He broke—and then doggedly followed—the Bush-era U.S. attorney firings, for which he won a George Polk Award in 2008.

Though he rarely opines, Marshall exhibits a clear liberal bent. His scoops tend to involve information unflattering to Republicans and prominent conservatives. Two of his biggest targets, Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, ended up resigning. With Democrats now in power, Marshall has to make do with significantly fewer targets.

Senate Shark Jump Announced

This story brings together three or four of the issues roiling American politics today in a bundle of smack-you-in-the-face arrogance that's too much to ignore.

A Total Strawman

When you sail in rough seas or adverse winds your sailing abilities don't cease to matter. They actually become even more important.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Boxed Out, Buddy

I thought that after 2008 we wouldn't get more chances to see McCain betraying all the principles and positions he claims to stand for.

The Chinese Wall

Dems [said] the Bush administration was too much politics and not enough attention to actual governing. But there's little doubt, I think, that the Dems have the inverse issue.

ACORN Scandal

What Were They Thinking?

As crazy as it may seem, I'm working on the assumption that O'Keefe really thought he'd get away with a major felony if he got recordings that would sound good enough on Fox and Drudge.

Campaign Finance Case

Not Rocket Science

There are some efforts underway to create some regulations on the margins. But that's a mistake. If the Democrats are smart they'll see that smart policy and smart politics come together in this case.

Health Care Reform

Reality Based Community

The work on doing health care is done. Congress and the president could be on to jobs tomorrow if they just passed this bill today. The work is done. But voters are thinking it's going to keep on going.

Kennedy's Replacement

Relieved

I want to recommend that everyone read the email we just got from a Senate staffer who will have to remain anonymous.

Health Care Reform

What's the Prez Made Of?

The president is going to come under withering pressure to walk away from reform. It'll come from the left and the right, and in various different flavors. It will come from shocking directions.

Tea Parties

Big Fibbin'

Politicians shouldn't tell lies. But they especially shouldn't tell really silly lies that can be easily proven with Google or a few craft TPM Readers.

Couple Thoughts on MA-Sen

[W]hile Republican Scott Brown clearly wants to filibuster the Health Care bill on final passage, he doesn't seem clear on why he opposes it.

National Security

Three Strikes You're Out? Ten? More?

[T]his is the third time the same folks have rolled out the 'B Team' concept, with the other times both being failures of almost unimaginable proportions.

Like Lott? Please

The problem for Lott was that almost everything from his past suggested that he knew the implications exactly and believed them deeply. To put it more baldly, too many past statements and actions made it clear he was a supporter of white supremacist politics and segregation.

Elections

All About The Screen

There's some reason to think that PPP is oversampling Republican voters. But I wouldn't bet money on it. If Dems won't avoid a very, very bad day on January 19th, they need to really get in gear on this race.

Health Care Reform

How Does This All Play Out

Since the House is being forced to basically give way entirely to the senate [on health care reform], they need at least a fig leaf, something to preserve institutional and intra-party self-respect.
