The Rachel Maddow Show

Rachel Maddow has hosted her own program on MSNBC since 2008, as well as a radio show on Air America since 2004. More information

Proving that partisan late-night television pundits can be successful without being angry, Maddow is an alternative to the incandescent fury of another leading MSNBC liberal, Keith Olbermann. Maddow's smile and constant civility—even when interviewing ideological opponents—has flustered guests accustomed to greater heat but less persistence.

A self-described "national-security liberal" with a background in AIDS activism and prison reform, Maddow has never worked in politics. She spent her pre-Air America at local radio stations in Massachusetts. Celebrated in some circles for her unapologetic geekiness and forthrightness about her sexuality, she was the first openly gay American to win a Rhodes scholarship.

Still on the Sotomayor Attack

Since he relapsed on the air, Newt Gingrich, affectionately known here as Republican blowhard emeritus, sort of and kind of didn‘t really back away from his declaration that Supreme Court nominee Justice Sonia Sotomayor is a racist.

Red Flags Ignored?

With all these red flags being raised about Scott Roeder, with the history of abortion-related violence we‘ve had in this country, why wasn‘t this guy stopped?

Anti-Abortion Terrorists Are Winning

Violence as a political strategy is working to make abortions so unsafe for doctors that they are unwilling to bear the risk of performing it so women can‘t actually get one regardless of whether or not it‘s legal. It‘s the same outcome as if abortion had been outlawed. They‘re winning.

Over the Top

If we can learn half as much about Judge Sotomayor through this [confirmation] process as we have learned about the right-wing through this process, thus far, it will be very informative indeed.

Supreme Strike Out

Since even before Judge Sonia Sotomayor was announced as the nominee, critics on the right have denounced her as an activist judge. Now, the word “activist” doesn‘t mean the same thing in this context as it does in the real world.

Attacking Sotomayor

If ... you think that you build up your political capital, you build up your political profile, you increase your political power by attacking a nominee—then it makes sense to come after Sonia Sotomayor with both political barrels.

The Obaminee

If you think of the Supreme Court as a whiskey sour—which I have to admit I‘d sometimes do—right now as it is currently mixed, it is not that tasty a drink. It does not have the right balance.

Cheney/Gingrich 2012?

Between them, Dick Cheney and Newt Gingrich hold as much official power as our recently-graduated college intern, Michael, who works part-time at a bar.

Gitmo Reversal

Democrats who once supported closing Guantanamo suddenly came down with a vague, nonspecific fear that caused them to take totally incoherent political action.

That's Gigrich Coming From You

If confronted with this horrible truth about his own statements about our nation‘s intelligence professionals, will Newt Gingrich now demand the resignation of himself?

Careful What You Wish For

The Republicans see a disagreement like that the same way that a bass sees a shiny, shiny, shiny, glinting piece of metal spinning through the lake. Never mind the big hook.

Dear Diary

[Nancy Pelosi is] the one calling for full release and investigation of all the documentation, which is not the kind of thing you usually do if you're the one who's hiding the truth.

Keeping Bush's Secrets

Is the fact that the abuse happened that‘s really the problem in terms of any potential problems for our troops overseas? Or is the fact that the abuse was photographed that is the problem?

Mum on Healthcare

It seems like [Obama is] doing a lot of talking to the right, but the people who are advocating a more liberal position than he wants aren‘t necessarily being involved in the discussion. It makes me think that the solution eventually is going to more conservative, too.

Science Wins Over Abstinence-Only

Think of it this way. We dated abstinence, but we‘re marrying science.
