The Washington Monthly

Steve Benen is "blogger in chief" for The Washington Monthly. More information

Part partisan strategist and part watchdog, Benen rarely misses an act in the D.C. political circus. His blog posts—advocating for universal health care, calling out centrist Democrats, decrying the GOP’s dedication to free markets—frequently drive coverage for left-leaning bloggers, who spread his takes across the Web.

After college, Benen worked in politics, beginning with an internship in the Clinton White House and peaking with his position as communications director for an unsuccessful candidate for Congress from Pennsylvania in 1996. He began blogging anonymously in 2003 at a site he called The Carpetbagger Report; he eventually dropped political work when his reach and influence ballooned after guest-blogging gigs at Salon, Crooks and Liars, the American Prospect, and The Huffington Post.

Nelson's Love For Obstructionism

In other words, a senator who claims to be a Democrat will not let a Democratic Senate vote, up or down, on some of a Democratic president's nominees. It's not enough to vote against them, Nelson wants to prevent his own Democratic colleagues from voting on them at all.

Shelby Shakedown Shutdown

That he backed down at all just a few days after launching his stunt suggests Dems were at least somewhat effective in embarrassing Shelby. With that in mind, the majority party should keep up its efforts to shine a light on GOP tactics that have gone out of control.

Obama Still Wants To "Punch It Through"

If the president is prepared to walk away from health care reform and pivot to other issues, he has a funny way of showing it.

Collins Keeps on Digging

Collins is now clinging to the notion that there "was no consultation with intelligence officials," but what she may not realize is that the FBI is actually pretty good at this, and there was no reason for the Justice Department to "consult" with other agencies. Honestly, Collins is coming across as a rookie, right-wing House member, more interested in getting on Fox News than seeming credible.

Why It Worked

When he was supposed to be meek, he showed confidence. When expected to be contrite, Obama seemed proud. When Republicans sought deference, the president responded with strength.

House Looks to Senate for Assurances

The odds are long, and the smart money is still on failure, but I'm not jumping out the window yet. Pass. The. Damn. Bill.

The Big Freeze

I don't doubt that spending freezes poll well...but that doesn't make this a good idea.

What A Scaled-Back Bill Might Look Like

he entire health care reform debate could end with a successful resolution if the House were to pass the Senate bill. But the House doesn't want to, at least not yet.

On Life Support - But Breathing

Barney Frank's comments were Exhibit A that a narrow majority of Massachusetts's voters may have in fact killed the year-long effort to deal with the nation's dysfunctional health care system.

Reform Doesn't Work Piecemeal...

One of the less reasonable health care options raised yesterday by panicky Democratic lawmakers was the notion of breaking the package into pieces...This was a very bad idea.

The Alternate Universe In Which Congress Functions

Dems have every reason to be angry and frustrated, but Dems should also remember who is most deserving of their ire.
